Things I Wish I Knew (If I were to start over again)

Are you giving up too soon to be a UIUX designer? Are you struggling to become a UI UX designer? I will tell you how I wish I had known these things before becoming a UIUX designer.

1. Designing isn’t a gifted ability, it can be trained

I’ve been doing UIUX design since covid started. You can call me a covid-inspired UI UX designer. Being a designer was not something that I thought of doing at the start. I couldn’t even differentiate colours and match them well. I did not know how to create good colour contrast. We all know that there’s slang where designers have to have a designer’s eye.

Designer's Eye

This basically means that they can instinctively see the flaws in a design such as the use of whitespace, colours, font, etc. So out of curiosity, I enrolled in courses and eventually equipped myself with the relevant skills. So don’t be afraid to try if you are not good with colours. Design isn’t being like an artist. Design is to ensure things are within a certain set of guidelines providing a good experience and aesthetics & that can be trained.

2. UIUX is a beginner-friendly role

UI UX? User interface & User experience? Too sophisticated? UIUX is a fancier way of saying designing digital products.

UIUX = Designing digital products

I studied electronics engineering, green building sustainability & business marketing. Courses that had nothing to do with design. I was unsure of what my profession would be during college & uni. In the end, I ended up doing UIUX which is none of what I studied. So don’t worry even if you come from somewhere irrelevant, UIUX design encourages inclusivity. It is a beginner-friendly role for someone who is keen to explore their potential.

3. Practice designing by copying

I’d browse through designs on Dribbble, Behance, Pageflows, Mobbin that’d inspire me to start designing.

Dribbble

Beautiful interfaces motivate me to get started. Then, I would work on copying most of the work either those that are already in the market or just pretty screens that aren’t as practical. Copying designs from a product that is already on market would be a more practical way because those designs have passed the guidelines and have been built. Remember, if you don’t know where to start, start by copying first. Copy, not just the UI, but also the user journey of several screens combined. Understand the reasons behind design and flow. You will learn more by copying than to create something new.

4. Discipline & Consistency

I make sure that I put a couple of hours into designing every day. That doesn’t mean designing, it can also be watching UIUX content on YouTube or blogs like what you’re doing now. I was watching almost 10 hours of content daily because covid gave us so much free time by locking us up at home. Bruce Lee once said that “I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times.”

Remember, having the right attitude & mindset is a great start to start anything.

To end it off,

With this, I’m sure that whatever how things might seem uncertain in the present, they would eventually fall into place if you never give up trying.
